UBI Lab Finland leads session 4 on the theme of UBI. We started to build understanding on the many perspectives and possibilities of UBI (Universal Basic Income), and to bring the fragmented, siloed, isolated thinking and experiences shared in the many social environments in the Hunome ‘social 4.0’ platform.
We now invite you to join in this build into a global sense-making session and into the Hunome SparkMap.
Status of the Build – Ongoing
In our Humanothon with Hunome on ‘Universal Basic Income’ session October 24, 2023 we had people with different backgrounds and knowledge making sense of the many perspectives of UBI. The results were fascinating, as evidenced by the SparkMap.
Thank you especially Caroline Richardson, Joe Carroll, Markus Vähälä, Elena Klaudis, Gunta Krumina and Besir Wrayet for your Sparks on Universal Basic Dividend / Citizens Fund as one potential solution to the funding of Basic Income. Sparks on Basic Income Plus (UBI+) talk about how the system can support people with extra needs or to recognize unpaid work and carers. UBI+ would also solve the problems caused by ‘patchwork’ type of welfare systems that have been created over decades in many countries that just don’t work properly to meet with people’s needs. ‘Add-on’ attempts such as Universal Credit in the UK won’t solve the fundamental design flaws. One new perspective to UBI is raised in a Spark that looks at how UBI might help reduce crime.
The need to collect much more insights for UBI for general awareness for it to be more widely known and clearly explained was also, yet again, highlighted. People have too many wrong ideas and misconceptions about it, or even complete lack of knowledge of it). In order to convince any party or government clear numbers and concrete economic calculations are needed to show how this new country wide economical model would be able to survive and sustain itself. Filmmakers and artists in other fields of art could also help tell the story of UBI in new and compelling ways. There now also is a map of various UBI groups around the world to link with other people focusing or related with UBI – you are invited to bring information about various UBI groups around the world there.
This session 4 coming on December 7 aims to bring more stakeholders with different skill sets into the Humanothon process and the SparkMap. We are encouraging the field experts and enthusiasts to join this fourth Humanothon session to continue to build common understanding on UBI and its way forward.
Brief Introduction to collaborative sensemaking on UBI: Could the introduction of UBI – significantly reduce poverty and act to address lack of equality? – reducing the complexity and cost of the welfare state? – allow people to contribute to their community and amplify participatory, deliberative and representative forms of democracy?
UBI is not a simple theme / phenomenon, there are many perspectives to consider. How can we help decision makers to understand and make great decisions on UBI? What are some great examples of experiments and innovative thinking around the world? What impact might UBI make? How would ‘installing’ UBI change people’s lives and societies? What about the global picture, what varies? What might be the root causes of the changes? Did we get those right or did convenience and supposed wishes take us in the wrong direction, without deep enough understanding? And what can be the unintended consequencesr? What’s next?
We are inviting you to deliberate and build forward the exciting SparkMap titled “UBI, Universal Basic Income”. It brings together – a systemic view to the theme – connecting the dots – the various perspectives surrounding UBI, the changes and impact, what is changing now, what are examples from around the world, what innovations, what possibilities for improvements, how are humans around the world experiencing the experiments and ideas put forward.
