Hunome at MozFest – Tackling misinformation through collective sensemaking

The purpose of Hunome is to help humanity make sense of itself on a collective sensemaking platform.

On Hunome, our members build multidimensional understandings. Their curiosity drives them and they build an understanding of an aspect of the world they feel strongly about. Whether independently or as part of a group, this enables sharing knowledge in contexts rather than bits and pieces.

At MozFest 2022, our participants built a multidimensional understanding of misinformation.

  • When we planned the event, we knew that misinformation was a vital issue to tackle. We must overcome its proliferation and return humanity on a constructive track.

  • Reaching a shared understanding or independently building an understanding for yourself is hard to achieve online today.

  • Humans have made enemies of people who disagree on anything. ´Us and them´ thinking has become very pronounced.

At the time of MozFest 2022 the world was again facing the tragic causes of misinformation. False narratives lead to severe consequences.

  • People exposed to one-sided messages for years will swallow them, thus helping the bad happen.

  • Evil happens when good people do nothing. If you have been heavily influenced by evil, you will not know how to act. This is not an excuse but a reality of what is happening.

On Hunome, such a one-sided view of the world is hard to achieve. We foster multidimensional sensemaking through the inclusion of multidisciplinary perspectives, which enables us to flex our perceptiveness muscle.

Human ingenuity is wonderful in the kinds of connections we make. On Hunome, we assist serendipity, which is the secret sauce for creativity and innovation.

Hunome´s MozFest misinformation Sparkmaps

The session's goal was to create a shared understanding of misinformation's causes and impacts and deliberate on potential fixes. Misinformation is rife was the kick off ‘Spark.´ Our members build in different ways depending on their ways of thinking and subject matter.

During our MozFest workshop, we focused on understanding misinformation as a theme. Yet, Hunome tackles misinformation in any theme by bringing diverse perspectives together to deliberate.

We’d love you to add your thoughts to this evolving Sparkmap. By connecting the dots, our members spark each other to new heights.

Do you have great insight into the history of misinformation? We would love to hear anthropological, sociological, and psychological perspectives. Do you have insights about the rise and fall of civilizations?

Here are some directions of the thinking lead during the workshop. However, the work always continues with new studies, thoughts, and ideas that continue to build a deeper understanding.

The causes of misinformation

Getting to the root causes happens when you keep asking questions. Often, after a while in the train of thought, you come to very human root causes. False information becomes successful for very human reasons. The Sparkmaps point to influences due to manipulation, trust, fear, coping, lack of transparency, needs, greed, and ego.

The impacts of misinformation

It might be interesting to build on the Sparkmap by adding your spark about the impact of the impact. This would lead to some fascinating nuance in the train of thought.

How to fix misinformation

As you can see, participants proposed some excellent ideas. Do come and add yours. SparkMaps know no limits.
